The Linden Tree of Morat : its History and Iconography

Armand Niquille was deeply attached to the Linden Tree of Murten and to the prominent place this commemorative tree occupied at the heart of the Bourg, opposite the Hôtel de Ville . The artist painted it five times, creating five "portraits" from different viewpoints. These works are recognized as central to his artistic career.

Organized in collaboration with the Botanical Garden of the University of Fribourg, which donated a sapling descended from the original linden tree felled in 1985, an exhibition by the Archives de la Ville de Fribourg traces the history of this historic tree over the centuries through archival documents. The open-air exhibition can be discovered at the lower end of Rue des Alpes. Among the illustrations accompanying the exhibition texts is Le Vieux Tilleul éclairé la nuit by Armand Niquille, a 1979 painting from the Collection Ville de Fribourg.
